ASC certification

Covers a named farm and a named chain of custody. It does not cover the company that owns them.

ASC certifies responsibly farmed seafood at the level of the individual farm, with a separate chain-of-custody certificate for every business that takes ownership of the product afterwards. That structure is precise and it is routinely misread: a producer with one certified site is not a certified producer, and a processor handling certified fish without its own chain-of-custody certificate breaks the chain no matter how good the fish is. Scope is the whole question, and scope is what we record.

What it covers

  • The named farm site listed on the certificate
  • The species and production system audited
  • Chain of custody for each business that takes ownership

What it does not cover

  • Other sites owned by the same company
  • Product handled after a break in the certified chain
  • Food safety — that is a separate standard entirely

How we verify it

We check the certificate number against the issuing body’s public register, record the exact scope and the expiry date, and register sister plants separately. Where a supplier is between audits we say so rather than passing the document on unread.
