The second figure is the one that matters. Most registered exporters hold no approval under their own company number. That is not an accusation — the largest sales companies are in that group, because the approval belongs to the establishment that packs the fish, not to the company that sells it. But it means an approval number handed to you by an exporter usually belongs to a different legal entity than the one you sign with, and that the number to ask for is the establishment’s.

Four registers, four kinds of number

What each number actually proves

The numbers look equally authoritative in a supplier presentation. They answer entirely different questions, and only one of them says anything about sustainability.
