Trade lane
Norway to Mumbai
Oslo (OSL) → Mumbai (BOM)
The largest long-term opportunity and the hardest to convert. Frozen portions, not fresh whole fish, are the entry product.
India has the hotel groups, the premium restaurants, the modern grocery and the online delivery platforms to absorb a great deal of salmon, and imports remain small relative to the size of the country. The reason is rarely appetite. It is that the entry product most exporters lead with — fresh whole fish on a weekly airfreight programme — assumes a cold chain and a turnover that most of the distribution does not yet have. Frozen portions with a long shelf life, sold on total landed cost rather than an Oslo price, fit the market that exists now.
How the goods move
Airfreight via a Gulf hub
1–2 days door to door
For fresh into hotel and premium restaurant supply in the main cities.
Reefer container via Suez
20–30 days port to port
The workable entry route. Frozen portions carry the shelf life the distribution needs.
Typical door-to-door transit as quoted by forwarders, counted from collection at the plant to delivery at the buyer’s address, including export handling and import clearance under normal conditions. Customs holds, inspection sampling and missed connections are not included. Last reviewed 15 September 2026.
Documents this destination requires
- Health certificate issued by Mattilsynet per consignment
- Importer-Exporter Code held by the buyer
- FSSAI import licence and compliant labelling
- Certificate of origin, EFTA declaration where it applies
- Catch certificate for wild-caught consignments
Who checks it on arrival
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for the product and its labelling, with customs on the tariff. The EFTA–India trade agreement entered into force on 1 October 2025; the rate that applies to a specific salmon product must be checked against its own HS code before an offer is made, never assumed from the agreement as a whole.
What stops a first shipment here
An Oslo price answers a question the buyer is not asking. Freight, duty, clearance and inland delivery to Delhi or Bengaluru can move the per-kilo cost more than the fish price does, and an offer that leaves them out reads as cheap and lands as expensive.
- Packing
- Frozen portions of 100–200 g, skinless and boneless, in retail or food service cartons. Long shelf life is the specification, not a bonus.
- Airports and ports
- OSL · BOM · DEL · BLR · HYD · Nhava Sheva
- Usual currency
- USD / INR
- Time zone
- UTC+5:30
- Regional context
- Fast-growing modern retail and a large reprocessing base. Halal certification and cold-chain integrity are the two gates.
Landed cost
What it actually costs on your floor — an estimate
We do not publish a fish price, because a number with no volume, Incoterm or validity is not information. What we publish is the arithmetic. Enter the rates you have been quoted — nothing is pre-filled — and the calculator converts the offer to a single comparable basis: net of glaze or ice, one Incoterm, one currency, every line named. The result is an estimate.
