Certificate

BRCGS Food Safety

A food safety standard for a processing site. It says nothing about where the fish came from.

BRCGS is a GFSI-recognised standard covering how a processing site manages food safety, and it is graded — a site is not simply certified but certified at a grade, with the audit type recorded. Buyers who ask only whether a plant holds BRCGS are asking half the question; the grade and the audit date are the part that varies, and an unannounced audit grade carries different weight from an announced one. It is also entirely separate from sustainability certification, and the two are regularly confused in supplier presentations.

Issued by

BRCGS, through accredited certification bodies

What it covers

  • Food safety management at the named processing site
  • A stated grade, from a stated audit type and date
  • The product categories included in the audit scope

What it does not cover

  • Sustainability or origin — those are MSC and ASC
  • Product categories outside the audited scope
  • Any other site, including one owned by the same group

How we verify it

We record the grade, the audit type and the expiry date, not only the fact of certification, and we check the scope covers the product being offered. A site certified for one category and offering another is a finding we report rather than a detail we pass over.

Fish of Norway does not hold this certificate and does not claim to. We verify our suppliers’ certificates against the issuing register, and that is the claim on this page.
